This interactive map shows you the most famous person from every single city, town and village around the world, revealing the birthplaces of some of the most famous human beings to have ever lived. The data is based on this study of notable people, which gave a ‘notability ranking’ to a whole load of famous peeps who lived between 3500BC and 2018. Data is based on Wikidata and Wikipedia. The map was heavily inspired by The People Map of the U.S. by the Pudding.
This map went viral in 2022 and made it to the top of Hacker News and featured in tens of news articles and blog posts around the world. See more about that in this Twitter thread.
The data was processed with PostGIS and the interactive map was created with Mapbox GL JS. You can view the interactive version here.
